Sheet Metal Shearing. The word “shears” defines the tool that can be used for cutting sheet metals. The shape of the shears can be very different, depending on the size and thickness of the sheet metal, but the principle of working is always the same: the tool uses the force impressed on two opposed cutting blades.
To cut thin sheet metals you can use the hand shears (which looks like a strong scissor), up to a maximum of 2-3 mm. To work on thicker sheet metals you can use the bench shears, in which one of the blades is fixed and parallel to the base, opposed to another which is movable and can be moved by a long lever, in order to impress a higher force. The shears can have shaped blades according to the work they make (for example: cutting pipes, square-section pipes or anything else). For larger and thicker sheet metals the industrial shears are used, which are moved by hydraulic or oil-pressure systems, which can cut sheet metals whose thickness is up to 3 cm.

This type of working is certainly the best known, as it exploits, as we have already seen, the opposed movement of two blades to make longitudinal cutting on flat sheet metals. The shear cutting system is appreciable for precision and speed of execution but, as it is by its nature a “cold” working system, it cannot overcome certain limits, linked to the considerable mechanical effort necessary to complete the operation. To make metal cutting on even greater thicknesses, hot (or flame) systems are used.
The process with industrial shears allows to make easy geometric shapes, with a speed of execution hardly equalled by other types of machineries. Finally thanks to the aid of the numerical control interface it is possible to realize cutting programmes, guaranteeing a very high level of precision.
